Join us at our December 5th Meet & Eat to hear from Dr. Osei Appiah present "Cultural Voyeurism and the Appeal of Race and Ethnically Ambiguous Characters in Advertising".

About the Presentation:
Advertisers and marketers are beginning to take advantage of noteworthy progress in race-relations as evident by their increasing use of racially diverse models in advertising.

In fact, there appears to be an emerging trend in advertising to use ethnically neutral, diverse or ambiguous characters to reach consumers. Research suggests that character ambiguity in ads may be effective because there is a current fascination, particularly among young consumers, with racial/ethnic outgroups and hybrid-looking models.

Ethnically ambiguous models may cross ethnic and racial lines that in the past prevented advertising campaigns from being effectively standardized to mass audiences. This talk will help practitioners better understand how to effectively market to racially diverse consumers.

 

About the Speaker:



Dr. Appiah is a Professor and Associate Director of the School of Communication at The Ohio State University. He previously served as the Chair of the Department of Advertising at Temple University. Dr. Appiah is a renowned communication and race scholar who has written and lectured about the impact of strategic communication messages in media on ethnic minority and majority members, and the role stereotypes play on intergroup interaction.

He holds a B.A. in Communication from Santa Clara University, an M.S. in Communication from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Communication from Stanford University. His professional experience includes market research at Yankelovich Partners, Inc., product marketing and customer research at Apple Computer, Inc., and sports marketing at Nike, Inc. He has also worked as a professor-in-residence and a multi-cultural media consultant for Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency in New York.
